Oppressive

Opression-Editsmall

Trying to create a feeling with an image is always risky because we all process visual information differently. I am reminded of the old story of the garden hose lying on the floor in a dark shed. An old man caught a glimpse of it in the gloom and ran screaming snake!, SNAKE!. A little boy, upon hearing the alarm, peered cautiously around the door, fearing what he was about to encounter, and couldn’t see anything but an old worn hose lying in the mud.

So it is with this overpass. For many I’m sure it’s nothing but a highway construction marvel. For me though, the heavy, rusty steel beams and massive concrete pylons hovering overhead feel threatening and I processed my photograph to try to capture that sense of oppression.

I'd love to hear from you
