Walking our usual bird watching route along the perimeter of Shollenberger Park last evening the darkening sky created a lovely scene. But the silver etched edges of the pond’s low waterline were a beautiful reminder of how badly this part of California needs water.

I expect my grandfather is rolling over in his grave out there; he was instrumental in ending the water wars of the 1920s in the Central Valley, by inventing a water measuring device that helped both sides see the folly of their ways. Water was precious… something he always tried to impress upon others.

Your Grandfather was right on target.
I’m afraid a lot of legal “water wars” will soon break out again if we don’t recognize that freshwater is a VERY valuable resource and can no longer be squandered on things like golf courses and subdivisions in the desert.
Even industrial scale agriculture in arid areas is going to have to reexamine what it’s doing and cut back on its water use.
